1. About the Role

ACE Money Transfer is looking for a motivated Database Administrator (DBA) to help keep our database environments reliable, fast and secure. The role focuses mainly on MySQL and Microsoft SQL Server (MSSQL).

You will play an essential part in keeping data available, accurate and running efficiently across our development, test (staging) and production systems. You will work closely with development, DevOps, operations and infrastructure teams on database provisioning, monitoring, maintenance and incident response.

The role reports to the Senior DBA / Database Lead [confirm]. It is a great opportunity to build hands-on expertise in database administration and cloud-managed services such as AWS RDS, with guidance from experienced engineers in a fast-growing, regulated fintech where data integrity and uptime matter.

2. Responsibilities

Database Administration & Support

• Help install, configure, and administer MySQL and MSSQL instances day-to-day, both self-managed and managed services such as AWS RDS.
• Support routine tasks, including user and privilege management, schema changes, backups and recovery procedures.

Environment Management

• Help set up and maintain database environments across Dev, Staging and Production.
• Keep configurations consistent, keep database changes under version control, and make sure schema and data move reliably between environments.

Performance Monitoring & Tuning

• Monitor database health, performance metrics and resource usage.
• Help identify slow queries, review execution plans and apply basic tuning recommendations under the guidance of a senior DBA.
• Use centralised monitoring and logging tools, such as PMM, Prometheus, Grafana and CloudWatch, to track database health and respond to actionable alerts.

Backup, Recovery & High Availability

• Take part in backup scheduling, validation and restore testing.
• Support replication, failover and basic high-availability configurations to keep services running.

Database Security & Compliance

• Help apply database security practices, including access control, encryption, auditing and compliance with company policies.
• Support patching and version upgrades together with the security and infrastructure teams.

Automation & Scripting

• Write and maintain basic automation scripts in Python, Bash or SQL to streamline tasks such as backups, monitoring checks, reporting and routine maintenance.

Cloud & Managed Database Services

• Support managed database services such as AWS RDS for MySQL, including provisioning, monitoring, scaling and ongoing maintenance.
• Work with cloud and infrastructure teams on networking, security groups and connectivity.

Incident Response & Collaboration

• Carry out initial triage of database incidents, such as connectivity problems, performance degradation, replication lag and failed jobs or backups.
• Work with Software Development, DevOps and Operations teams to support application database needs, troubleshoot environment issues and keep databases running smoothly throughout the software development lifecycle.

Documentation & Continuous Learning

• Keep accurate documentation of database configurations, runbooks, and procedures.
• Keep building your expertise in MySQL, MSSQL, database administration best practices, and new database technologies.

3. Requirements

Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field.
• At least 2 year of experience in database administration, database support, or a related IT operations role.
• Hands-on experience with MySQL administration: installation, configuration, user management, backups and restores.
• Hands-on experience managing AWS RDS and SQL Server / MySQL instances.
• Familiarity with SQL and relational database concepts, including indexing, normalisation, transactions and locking.
• Knowledge of cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure or GCP.
• Scripting and programming skills in Python, Bash or PowerShell.
• Familiarity with monitoring and logging tools.
• Knowledge of networking, security practices and server administration.
• A plus:
  • Familiarity with NoSQL databases such as MongoDB, Redis or DynamoDB.
  • Relevant certifications, such as Oracle MySQL Database Administrator or IBM Certified Database Associate.
